Selangor is actively engaged in efforts to cultivate and support a diverse range of unicorn companies across various industries within the state, taking inspiration from the success of Carsome, an online platform for used cars. Ng Sze Han, the state executive councillor for trade and investment, highlighted that this initiative is aimed at further propelling Selangor's economic growth. Speaking at the State Legislative Assembly, he emphasized the government's commitment to providing support through various programs and initiatives to promising startups poised for growth and advancement.
Ng stressed the importance of supporting startups across all sectors, particularly those within Selangor exhibiting potential for expansion and maturity. He cited Carsome, headquartered in the state, as a prime example of Selangor's success in fostering unicorn companies. The government aims to assist more startups in realizing their potential and achieving international success, ultimately attaining unicorn status.
In response to a question regarding the state government's efforts to identify and support startups in Selangor and nurture them into unicorn companies, Ng outlined various initiatives already in place. These include programs like the Selangor Xccelerator Programme (ECX) and the Selangor Accelerator Programme (SAP), which aim to facilitate business enhancement for startups. The SAP, scheduled to run from June to October 2024, will select 50 startup companies, with 20 finalists presenting their ideas before 10 winners are chosen.
Other initiatives mentioned by Ng include providing co-working spaces, incubator centers, and digital innovation spaces, as well as digital training and education through the Selangor Digital School (SDS) and collaborations with the private sector.
