The ChatGPT app for Mac is now accessible to everyone.

You can now easily access ChatGPT on your Mac computer. OpenAI announced on Tuesday that its popular AI chatbot is now available to all macOS users. The app was first introduced ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2024 in June, where both companies revealed integrations between OpenAI’s chatbot and Apple’s operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

On Mac, users can quickly bring up ChatGPT using the keyboard shortcut Option + Space after installing the new ChatGPT app. This feature will feel familiar to macOS users who are used to other shortcuts like Command + Space for Spotlight Search. Instead of a traditional search, this shortcut provides access to a wide range of knowledge with just one button. Once launched, ChatGPT appears as a chat interface overlay on the screen.

OpenAI's launch of the macOS app was somewhat overshadowed at the time of the announcement by the introduction of GPT-4o, their advanced generative AI model that handles text, speech, and video. The "o" in GPT-4o stands for "omni," reflecting its multimodal capabilities.

The ChatGPT desktop app, available to both free and paid users, was included in the same press release. The app can be summoned with a simple keyboard shortcut, and users can take and discuss screenshots directly within the app. It also allows users to upload files and photos, speak to ChatGPT from their desktop, and search through past conversations.

Initially, the app rolled out to Mac users starting with Plus subscribers. Today, however, OpenAI announced on X that it is now available to everyone.

This integration is not limited to Mac computers. At WWDC, a broader partnership was announced, allowing Apple customers to access ChatGPT on their iPhones and iPads, including through Siri and other AI-aided tools like Writing Tools. These features, also powered by GPT-4o, will become available to Apple customers later this year with the release of Apple's latest operating systems.
